It seems Android 5.1 Lollipop is subjecting Nexus devices to a reign of terror at the moment. We have already heard about the update actually bricking some Nexus 7 tablets, and it seems the 5.1 software build is now causing camera problems for those rocking the Nexus 5 smartphone.

Google is already aware of the issue thanks to a bug report and the problem seems to cause the Nexus 5 camera app to force close in numerous circumstances. This has been happening since the Android 5.1 Lollipop update, with users saying the app closes when initiated by a third party app such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. In some cases the app is even shutting down when opened through Android.

The issue can be resolved by rebooting the handset (turning it on and off), but many are reporting that this is only a temporary fix and the problem does come back. It?s hardly ideal for taking a pic on the fly, especially as the bug seems capable of striking at any time, even after a reboot. Google is working on a fix and will probably roll it out some time this week, but in the meantime it is probably best to hold off on the 5.1 update for your Nexus 5 if you have not already pulled it in OTA.
