This time last year it would have been unthinkable for Apple to match Samsung in the smartphone market, but that has happened through the calendar fourth quarter. An astonishing turn of events where Samsung's sales have declined and Apple's iPhone sales soared meant that both companies sold 74.5 million smartphones through the October to December quarter.

The numbers come from Strategy Analytics and are tough to comprehend if you have followed these companies over the last few years. Samsung was way ahead of any other company in terms of how many smartphones it sold, with Apple in second place content in its hugely profitable place in the market. However, a perfect storm of events has led to Samsung dropping from 86 million in 2013 and Apple growing from 51 million.

Samsung is likely to grab first place back in the coming quarters, but there is no doubt that the gap has closed significantly and Sammy?s place is in serious danger in 2015. It is also worth remembering that Samsung has over 25 smartphones on the market, while Apple has just a handful, making Apple's feat all the more stunning.
