I have been saying for a long time that Samsung is looking to Tizen long term and if the software is successful the Korean company will make a move from Android for its core products. A Samsung source confirmed this to me, although some commentators still see Tizen as a hobby for the company... It's not. With Tizen smartwatches, TVs, and now a first smartphone (the Z1 launched this week), Samsung is laying a foundation. The company has explained some of the benefits of Tizen: "The benefits of Tizen are very simple: Tizen is 'lighter' than other operating systems," Samsung writes. "In other words, Tizen requires less processing power and memory, thereby ensuring faster device speeds while consuming less energy. As a result, consumers will benefit from a smoother user experience through the likes of shorter boot time, faster web browsing and seamless multitasking, all the while enjoying longer battery life." As a former TouchWiz user, Tizen had better be very light or Samsung's software problems will remain. That said it is obvious that Samsung is championing its own software and would prefer to control its own ecosystem in the same way Apple does. With the company reportedly flooding the market with Tizen products through this year, expect fireworks between Sammy and Android in the future.
