As well as raising the curtain on the fantastic ZenFone 2 yesterday at CES, Asus also had another new device to show off, the ZenFone Zoom. Unlike the flagship baiting and affordable ZenFone 2, the Zoom is more of a niche device that is focused on photography and it carries a weightier, yet still decent, price tag.

The Zoom does not hide its intentions, with the camera module sitting proud and large on the back of the device. It comes with the new Asus UI running on top of Google?s Android 5.0 Lollipop, although the skin is light load and simplistic, letting Lollipop speak for itself. It has similar specs to the ZenFone 2, which means:

Asus also has an "industry first" as well with the company saying this is the first smartphone to pack 4GB of RAM, something I am sure will become more common as 2015 progresses. There are actually two RAM variants of the ZenFone 2, a DDR3 2GB option and the DDR3 4GB options. In terms of processing power, the handset gets a 64-bit Intel Atom Z3580 quad-core processor running at 2.3GHz.

16GB/32GB/64GB will be the storage options, with each version coming with expandable space through a micro SD card slot. The smartphone will come with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box and will be dressed with Asus' Zen UI, a solid minimal take on the Android experience. The screen is a 5.5-inch Full HD 1080p IPS panel, with a 403 pixel per inch density and a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 coating.

The camera is of course different, it is a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.7 to 4.8-aperture, 10-element lenses with 3X optical zoom, OIS (optical image stabilisation), laser auto-focus and dual-color Real Tone flash. The device is more expensive than the bargain ZenFone 2 ($199.99) and will cost $399.99 when it launches in the second quarter of this year.
