Remember September? It was a busy month for smartphone launches with a slew of new handsets landing on the market. The beginning of 2015 is going to be similar with most Android vendors releasing new flagship devices and we may even get some Windows offerings too. Sony is one of the companies that will be launching a new smartphone flagship, the Xperia Z4.There have been two contrasting rumors around this handset so far. The first one suggests that Sony will pull out all the stops and create a flagship par excellence with the latest specs, while the other reports hint that the device will actually just be an incremental update over the Xperia Z3. Now, the Z3 is a very good smartphone, but still we would prefer the overhaul. Looks like we will not be getting it though as a new report today suggests Sony is taking the lesser of the two options. The rumor says that Xperia Z4 will get a 5.2-inch 1080p screen as opposed to the 5.4-inch Quad HD previously rumoured, while it will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 instead of an 810. That will be a slight processor bump and a bigger screen size over the Z3, but hardly anything to suggest not just getting the older Xperia for less money. Sony is on a slippery slope with this tactic. The company has said it is focusing on high end flagship products in 2015, but the company will only update its core smartphone by tiny amounts. The Japanese company changes flagships every six months and despite each new addition being very good and better than the previous, they are starting to get a bit blurred. Is the Xperia Z3 any better than the Z2, and will the slightly bumped Z4 be that much of a leap from the still new Z3? If Sony launches the Z4 with these modest specs you could arguably pick up an Xperia Z2 for a much more affordable price and have much the same experience. Yes, Sony's new Exmor IMX230 will make the camera experience a definite improvement over previous models, but for our money that is not enough. The time has come for Sony to either turn to a once a year flagship roll out, or do something but with the Xperia Z4. We do not even have to review the device. If it arrives as an incremental update all reviews will say it is very good, but not a big enough leap from the previous model.
