Not every smartphone needs to be a stylish beast to tote and show off to your friends, some just need to get the job done. Whipping an iPhone 6 out when trekking the Amazon or conquering the North Pole is probably not going to cut it, so you will want to get more rugged. Sure, company's like Samsung play at doing the rugged stuff, but if you want a truly rough and tumble handset one of your first port of calls should be Sonim. The company specializes in making devices that stare down the elements and laugh them off and their latest effort is no different. The new XP7 Extreme has a name for the job, and Sonim is hoping people will part with their cash to fund its build as the company has started an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign for the device. The XP7 Extreme is according to Sonim "the world's most rugged LTE Android smartphone," and is targeted for the extreme sports enthused. Interestingly, the company does not want you to ditch your daily driver, instead it wants you to use the Extreme as a companion device when you are tackling a mountain, fishing, hiking, skiing, or whatever particular death defying pastime is your particular bag. As this is a go anywhere smartphone you probably already know that it is hardly a thing of beauty, while it will be pretty darn chunky too. The XP7 Extreme does not let us down on those fronts, it's a beastly thing, but that girth is for a reason as the handset can be dropped on concrete from two meters, can resist shock, and can handle impacts too. On top of that, it can be submerged in water (even the salty kind) and is also dirt, mud, sand, and dust proof. also, it also laughs in the face of oil and chemical spills. Just in case you do not believe Sonim, the company offers a 3-year warranty on the device. In terms of the actual smartphone stuff, the Sonim XP7 Extreme carries a 4-inch 480p screen with Gorilla Glass, LTE and 3G, Android 4.4 KitKat, and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/r, Bluetooth 4.0. There is an 8 megapixel shooter on the rear of the device, while a 1.2GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 is paired with 1GB of RAM to power the handset. The massive 4800mAh battery offers talk time of 40 hours and will run on standby for 41 days. The XP7 Extreme costs a $579 contribution to Sonim's Indiegogo page, with the device set to start shipping in March 2015. The handset will come with an Ultra Mobile SIM, $49 of credit, a microUSB adapter, and a Sonim virtual goodie bag, whatever that is. source: Sonim, Indiegogo
