Sony has launched its new Xperia Z3 Compact today at IFA, a smaller version of the also announced Xperia Z3 flagship. As we expected, the new Compact follows the Z2 version by offering a complete flagship experience in a smaller form factor. Simply put, if you want a device with a smaller screen then this could be the one for you, and it is infinitely better than handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini and HTC One Mini 2.

As I mentioned when the handset leaked earlier this week, the Xperia Z3 Compact looks fantastic and has Sony's usual high end appeal. It carries the company's OmniBalance design language and it could be argued that aesthetic has never looked better than it does here. However, looks aside, the reason to be interested in this handset is because it offers flagship kicks in a small body.

The Xperia Z3 Compact gets a quad-core 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage and Android 4.4 KitKat. One of the standout features is Sony's excellent 20.7 megapixel Exmor RS sensor that the company has made tweaks to. Of course, this being Sony the Company is waterproof to an IP68 level, while the screen is 4.6-inches and has a 720p resolution. Indeed the screen is the only real compromise, but at this size it will not be a hugely noticeable loss.

The handset will launch this fall and will cost flagship money probably, which will ultimately be its downfall. If the Xperia Z3 Compact was cheaper it would be a hit, I have no doubt of that, but occupying the same price point as other flagships, not to mention the soon to arrive 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy Alpha will squeeze it from the consumer mind. A shame really, as this is a very good small screen smartphone.
