Sony got its IFA underway with its wearables today and the SmartBand Talk got the ball rolling in Berlin. When this device leaked this week I speculated that the Talk meant that this fitness tracker could take calls, but that seemed unlikely. As it turns out the SmartBand Talk can in fact take and make calls thanks to the built in microphone and speaker. This is actually a huge move by Sony as the SmartBand is not a smartwatch but is a true fitness tracker, although you will have to pay a premium for that talk functionality. The device sports an ARM Cortex-M4 32-bit processor with 2MB of flash memory, and a 1.4-inch black and white display e-paper display. The slim band has volume and menu buttons mounted on the edge, but aside from that it is a clean design. This is Sony, so the waterproofing is typically along for the ride, rated at IP68 here, while connection to any Android 4.4 device can be achieved via NFC or Bluetooth. Yes, you can also make and take calls on the move too, although we are interested to see how the speaker and microphone works in the wild. For this package you will have to pay smartwatch money, ?160 (around $210) when the SmartBand arrives this fall.
