Corning, the company behind the Gorilla Glass that is found on just about every decent smartphone would have you believe that sapphire glass is not a threat. The company even created a video showing how Gorilla Glass is better than sapphire, that's how not worried Corning is. However, it seems more companies are willing to use sapphire and Chinese company Huawei is the latest.

Huawei is going to launch a new version of its Ascend P7 smartphone that will have a sapphire screen. The company has said that the device will be a limited edition only available through its website, which means anyone outside China will have a hard time getting it. The handset will also be more expensive than the current P7 thanks to that sapphire, but Huawei says if initial limited launches in September and November work the device will get a larger roll out.

The Ascend P7 could well become the first smartphone on the market with a sapphire glass screen, but it depends when in September it launches. We imagine it will land on the floor of IFA next week, where Huawei will be launching some new products. However, fellow Chinese brands such as Xiaomi and Vivo are also said to be working on sapphire packing devices.

Apple is also launching the iPhone 6 on September 9th and Cupertino is widely believed to have ditched Gorilla Glass in favour of sapphire, but that admittedly remains to be seen.

As for the Ascend P7 variant, it is the same device as the normal variant aside from the screen component. It has a 5-inch 1080p screen with 441ppi, a HiSilicon Kirin 910T 1.8GHz quad core processer with 2GB of RAM, a 13 megapixel rear camera, an 8 megapixel secondary unit, and 16GB of on board storage. Huawei has yet to confirm how much more expensive the sapphire version will be or when exactly it will land.
