Momentum is really picking up now around Sony's upcoming Xperia Z3 flagship with the Japanese company's handset today showing up at the FCC in the United States. That means the smartphone is nearing its official release and it seems Sony is even ready to show the US some love. Whether the company will get any back from consumers is another matter of course.

The Z3 is set to replace Sony's Xperia Z2, a flagship that was released at the start of the year. While the Z2 is a fine smartphone and is only a few months old, Sony has slipped under the radar as rivals continue to launch improved handsets through the summer. The company's answer to the LG G3, HTC One M8, and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Alpha will be the Xperia Z3, Sony's best smartphone to date.

To take the fight to it Android rivals Sony is being particularly aggressive with its hardware and the Z3 should be a beastly performer. The 5.2-inch (it could be as large as 5.5-inch) screen is likely to be of the Quad HD variety, while Qualcomm's blunderbuss processor the Snapdragon 805 will be aided by 3GB of RAM. The very good 20.7 megapixel rear snapper from the Xperia Z2 will be retained, as will the overall design language of the device.

The Z3 could mark the first Sony flagship where the country tries for an all-out assault in the US. North America has never been a good hunting ground for Sony in the smartphone market, but the company's recent flagship efforts have certainly had the potential to find wider audiences in the US. Strangely though, Sony has delayed releasing its high end phones in North America, allowing other companies to take over. We hope the company rolls out the Xperia Z3 fairly quickly to all markets so we can see how it matches up to some of the current blockbuster handsets.
