Every year, Google announces the latest activation figures to reveal how many Android devices have been activated over time. Today, Google switched to measuring the number of devices used within the past 30 days. By that metric, there are more than 1 billion active Android smartphones and tablets. Google says those 1 billion users also send 20 billion texts per day, take 93 million self portraits, and collectively check their smartphones 100 billion times per day.
The increase in activity is primarily in smartphones, but tablets have grown considerably. Google didn't break down usage by device, but it did share that Android tablet shipments went up from 46 percent last year to 62 percent today. Another metric that illustrates how much Android has grown is that the company reports a 236 percent increase of app installs.
