Google's Project Tango made its debut as an advanced mapping and 3D sensor venture a few months ago. Today it has expanded to the tablet world with a special device running Nvidia's Tegra K1 processor. The new Project Tango Tablet Developer's Kit follows the same path as the smartphone in that it's designed to use a number of cameras and "advanced sensor fusion algorithms" to detect depth and become better at creating three-dimensional imagery. The technology could potentially create better indoor maps for real estate, interior design, or furniture purposes. It could be incorporated into 3D gaming that blurs the lines between virtual reality and actual reality.
Another interesting tidbit about the Tango tablet is that it features an Nvidia Tegra K1 processor. We've mentioned that Nvidia was getting out of the mainstream consumer market because of price pressures and competition, but the company said it would still pursue super high-end products. Considering Tango's designed to be cutting edge technology, this definitely counts as an exception Nvidia's willing to make. The K1 aims to take "computer vision out of the research lab" and be more mobile. Imagine how much more mapping could be done if the only equipment necessary was a handheld tablet with powerful computing capabilities rather than a rig of specialty cameras. The K1 has a 192-core GPU capable of handling the range of cameras and sensors operating together to make Project Tango possible. The device also has a 7-inch display, 4GB of RAM, a 4-megapixel camera, a motion tracking camera and a depth sensor, 128GB of internal storage, and Android 4.4 KitKat. If you $1,000 to spare and a practical reason for using it, the Project Tango Tablet Developer's Kit will be available later this year.
