Many Samsung Galaxy Note 3 owners purchased flip cases developed by third parties, but the effectiveness of those cases evaporated when Samsung released the Android 4.4 update. Despite complaints from users, Samsung denies that it is at fault for the malfunctioning cases.
Third party case designers have previously been able to use the S View features that show the time and notifications as well as turn the screen on or off when the case is opened or closed. However, some members of the XDA Developers forum report that the non-Samsung S View features no longer seem to work since installing the Android 4.4 update.
Samsung has issued the following statement to the All About Samsung blog:
"To ensure a pleasant and smooth user experience with Samsung products for our customers, we recommend that only original accessories from Samsung be used. Of course, customers can continue to rely on third-party accessories. The full functionality of our devices and accessories, however, can only be ensured with genuine Samsung components, since only in this way it is ensured that equipment and accessories are perfectly matched. A correlation between the Android version 4.4 and the supposed incompatibility of third-party accessories does not exist."
So how can there be no correlation if the problem only emerged after users installed Android 4.4? Well, it seems Samsung is denying that it intentionally broke compatibility and there should be no reason that the cases suddenly do not function properly. However, that's clearly not the case according to the affected users. Samsung appears to be shifting the blame to third-party case makers and saying it has no responsibility for the failure of their products.
