Months ago, Samsung filed a design patent for a phone that some thought would become the Galaxy Note 3. Time ultimately proved that to not be the case, but Samsung has once again filed a patent bearing the same design. Might this be the next Galaxy Note or Galaxy S 5?

Most tech companies file patents for ideas that they have but never get utilized in the final product, so there's nothing definite about this being the design for a new phone. In fact, the difference between this design and the one that ultimately proved to be the Note 3 is evidence of that. However, Samsung's decision to file the patent on December 31, 2013, makes it possible the company may have chosen to further explore this new design.

The drawings teach us that Samsung may finally decide to get rid of its physical Menu button and rely only on virtual navigation, something that Google recommends but only Motorola and LG utilize. The back of the device shows a camera with flash and what's likely to be a speaker on either side of it. The drawings remind me of the HTC One X but it will probably have plastic or metal rather than polycarbonate materials. There's clearly a space for an S Pen, but since the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S tend to follow a similar design pattern, this could, maybe, possibly be the first look at what kind of design changes to expect from Samsung's flagship Android phones later this year.
