Galaxy Note 3
Samsung today unveiled the sequel to one of the biggest smartphones of 2012, literally and figuratively. The Korean manufacturer has debuted the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, a new Android 4.3 Jelly Bean device with an S Pen stylus for drawing, note taking, and a lot more.
The Galaxy Note 3 has a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED HD display with 1080p HD resolution. The increase in size did not lead to a larger device as Samsung managed to reduce the bezel on the device. The back of the device has a leather material for a "more premium feel" and comes in Jet black, Blush Pink, and Classic White.
The phone also has 3GB of RAM and the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.3 GHz quad-core processor. First introduced on the LG G2 last month, the Snapdragon 800 has become the processor to beat because of its clock speed and the ability manage multiple cores more efficiently to lengthen its battery life. In some regions, the phone might have a 1.9 GHz Exynos octa-core processor made by Samsung. The octa-core processor will have a pair of A15 1.9GHz cores and A7 1.3 GHz cores.
Samsung did a rather poor job containing the many leaks of the device in recent weeks, but the company did manage to keep a few details under wraps. For instance, the new S View flip case for the Galaxy Note 3 has a preview screen similar to the LG Quick Window. Rather than a horizontal window that we saw on the Galaxy S4, the Galaxy Note 3 has a new preview screen that's square-shaped, just like the Quick Window. It will be available in nearly a dozen colors.
The latest implementation of the S Pen offers a better S Pen for multitasking. There's a new finder and note-taking implementation that is activated directly by the Pen. Someone can see a dot on screen and press an S Pen button to launch Air Command, a shortcut to memos that can be linked to different functions, scrap booking, writing, or search. It also has improved note-taking software that synchronizes with Evernote.
The Android 4.3-based Touchwiz software has been updated to support new features, including the ability to run two versions of the same app in Multi Window. In other words, you can have two browsers open at the same time or two chat windows. Security seekers will be happy to know that Samsung includes its enterprise-ready KNOX data and communication protective services.
Samsung will begin selling the Galaxy Note 3 later this year on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile. Price and release date availability will be announced by carriers. Full specs are below:
