When making a gadget for children, it's common to make a device have bright colors and have an added layer of protection because children are not the most careful creatures on Earth. The new Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Kids follows those rules in order to make parents more comfortable with giving their children an Android tablet.
The Galaxy Tab 3 Kids has a bright yellow body and a thick orange case designed to have extra grip and decrease the likelihood, or at least the damage, or dropping a device. The tablet also comes with grip-friendly "C Pen" stylus designed for drawing on the 7-inch screen. The hardware isn't the most impressive other there, but you wouldn't expect a child-friendly tablet to be very competitive. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Kids has a:
- 7-inch WSVGA (1024x600, 170ppi) TFT display
- 1.2 GHz dual-core processor
- 1GB of RAM, 8GB internal storage, 32GB microSD slot
- 3-megapixel camera
- 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera
- 4,000 mAh battery
Samsung built the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software in the Galaxy Tab 3 Kids edition to have software and games targeting children, but it also included software to give parents more control over its use. Time Management lets parents make the tablet accessible only during certain hours unless a password is entered, and the Application Manager creates a list of apps that children can use. Though Samsung preloads educational apps and games, a special Kid's Store provides more options.
The Galaxy Tab 3 Kids will go on sale in South Korea next month and then rollout globally. Price details and specific dates of availability have yet to be announced.
