Apple iPhones are expensive. That hasn't kept Apple from being the leading smartphone seller at the biggest carriers in the U.S., but it has kept iOS from being more competitive with Android. The iPhone 5C may help reverse that trend.

It's important to pause and note that a "cheaper" iPhone has been rumored for a couple of years and never materialized. The "cheap" iPhone is just a rollover of last year's model being sold for less on contract but still being expensive. New rumors suggest that Apple will purposely release more affordable iPhones made from plastic, not aluminum. It would be a complete break from Apple's pattern of iPhones but numerous reports suggest that the iPhone 5C will be the lower-cost iPhone people have demanded. Whether this device will be satisfactory remains to be seen.

Chinese website CTech has posted photos of what is supposedly the iPhone 5C. The colors are very bright and gel with previous reports that Apple might release the phone in multiple colors. I'm still skeptical about the truthfulness of these rumors and will not feel confident until Apple confirms things on September 10, but this might be what CEO Tim Cook announces on stage next month.
