The heap of messaging apps competing to be the preferred mobile messaging service has increased competition to the point that companies need to offer more than just text-based messaging. Multiplatform messaging service WhatsApp today announced that it has released a new Voice Messages feature for all of its supported operating systems.
Android, iOS, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry WhatsApp users now have the option to send and receive audio messages. Recordings include previews before sending and receipts for when a contact has listened to the message. Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone 8 users can automatically set audio based on phone position. Holding the phone close to the ear will play messages normally, but WhatsApp uses proximity sensors to know when the phone is held away and then automatically switches to speakerphone.source: WhatsApp
