Nokia today unveiled the worst kept secret since it switched to Windows Phone in 2011; the Nokia Lumia 1020 will bring a more robust version of PureView camera technology and introduce a 41-megapixel camera sensor to Windows Phone 8. Unveiled moments ago in New York City, the Lumia 1020 will soon arrive at AT&T with a resume that will be foreboding to competing smartphones.

The Lumia 1020, frequently leaked as the Nokia EOS, is a Windows Phone 8 smartphone with a 4.5-inch AMOLED display with 1280x768 resolution. It has features that have become standard for high-end Lumia devices, including PureMotion HD+, ClearBlack, Sunlight Readability, and increased sensitivity on the touch panel to improve display visibility and enable touchscreen operation even when someone is wearing gloves. The Lumia 1020 also has a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, but it upgrades previous iterations by having 2GB of RAM instead of the typical 1GB.

The extra RAM will be necessary for the Lumia 1020 to have such a powerful camera. The 41-megapixel Pureview sensor has OIS to minimize blur, BSI to improve photos with a heavy light source behind the subjects, and a high-resolution mechanical zoom that has 3x zoom. Like the Lumia 925 and Lumia 928, the Lumia 1020 has a combo Xenon flash package for photos and an LED flash for videos. The Pro Camera mode included can include more controls to gain more influence on the final results of photos.

The Lumia 1020 has a "shoot first" mentality as CEO Stephen Elop says. The phone actually captures multiple versions of the same image. One is a final 5-megapixel product with a tremendous level of detail and the other is the higher megapixel version that can zoom in to discover more content than someone would normally find. For instance, you can zoom in on a friend posing for a picture but the lens might still capture highly-detailed photos of another person standing next to him or her. It can even zoom in on a label near someone's clothing and still have legible text.

AT&T will begin offering the Lumia 1020 July 26 for $299 when purchased with a two-year agreement. The phone will be available in Black, White, or Yellow. A separately sold camera grip accessory will provide a more traditional camera feel that also adds additional battery life for $79. Full specs for the device include:

- Dimension: 130.4 x 71.4 x 10.4mm (5.13 x 2.8 x 0.41in)
