During Game 5 of the NBA Finals, a curious three-minute commercial announcing the upcoming release of rap artist Jay-Z's new album Magna Carta Holy Grail featured Samsung's "The Next Big Thing" tagline. So what's the connection between Jay-Z and Samsung? The Magna Carta Holy Grail.
Samsung and Jay-Z have partnered to give away the Magna Carta album to the first 1 million people to download and share the album. Anyone who owns a Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy S 4, or Galaxy Note II will be able to download an app that includes downloads for the music, as well as details and "personal stories" about the album. People will then be able to share the music to other Galaxy owners using S Beam, Facebook, or Twitter.
The pairing of the two companies is unique but makes sense. Samsung benefits by having a big-budget campaign that garners a lot of attention and press for its Galaxy line of phones, as well as the small attention that will be paid to S Beam. Jay-Z will benefit because Samsung has prepaid for the million digital copies of Magna Carta that will be given away, guaranteeing a healthy sum of profits before the album is even released. The deal also garners goodwill for Samsung as a way to reward people who have purchased Galaxy phones in recent years. Not everyone is a Jay-Z fan, but with the millions of Galaxy devices sold since 2012, there's bound to be more than enough fans that will quickly claim the 1 million vouchers for Magna Carta Holy Grail.source: Jay-Z and Samsung
