Sundar Pichai, Google SVP of Android and Chrome, revealed today that Android is on fast pace to reach 1 billion activations. At its Google I/O developer conference, Pichai announced that more than 900 million Android smartphones and tablets have been activated since 2008.
Google announced in 2011 that Android had reached 100 million activations, and that number skyrocketed to 400 million in 2012. Pichai said the "momentum has been breathtaking" and promised that Android would see hundreds of millions more activations in the future.
"We have to remember that there are over 7 billion people in the world," Pichai said when highlighting areas that Android has yet to see mass adoption rates. "The next part of the journey is making sure that we reach the next 4.5 billion people in the world."
