Verizon announced yesterday that its 4G LTE network has reached 491 markets and covers an area that reaches 287 million people. The second-place carrier has added five new cities and towns to the list of LTE markets. Those markets are El Centro, Calif.; Fort Dodge, Iowa; Middlesboro/Harlan and Paducah, Ky.; and East Liverpool, Ohio.

About 95 percent of areas with 3G service from Verizon have been upgraded to have 4G LTE. Verizon has previously said that its entire coverage area would have 4G LTE by mid 2013, so the remaining five percent yet to be upgraded should be able to access the enhanced network within the next 3 to 4 months. That would complete Verizon's LTE deployment at a time when other carriers are just ramping up their planned rollouts.
