Samsung Exynos 5 processor uses a total of eight cores to balance speed and battery life

While much of the talk about smartphone chips has been about dual-core or quad-core comparisons, Samsung has announced it plans to skip ahead with the Exynos 5 Octa, a processor that has a total of eight cores to get things done.

Samsung's Exynos 5 Octa processor is the first to use ARM's big.LITTLE infrastructure, a technique that pairs two quad-core CPU's and splits tasks between them based on needs. Though the term Octa implies that there are eight cores in the processor, it's important to reiterate that Exynos 5 is really a team of two quad-core processors rather than a single octa-core processor. The "big" half of the duo is built for performance. When performing intense tasks like gaming or rapidly rendering complex content, Exynos 5 relies on a quad-core Cortex-A15 processor capable of delivering the quicker and more impressive results. When it's time for easier tasks, the quad-core Cortex-A7 "LITTLE" member uses less power but still performs quickly, allowing for up to 70 percent more efficient use than the previous Exynos model, which leads to significantly longer battery life.

Exynos 5 Octa has a total of eight cores that work as a committee. To apply a sports analogy, it's the same way that a football team might design some plays for its faster running back but have a second running back who is called upon for short distances where power and durability are most important. The Exynos 5 Octa does the same by selecting one of the two quad-core set-ups based on the needs of a particular activity. NVIDIA employed a similar concepts in its 4+1 architecture that uses a quad-core processor paired with single-core for less intensive tasks, but the big.LITTLE concept in Exynos 5 offers adaptable power and efficiency with two quad-core processors.

Specific details about availability have not yet been disclosed, but Samsung promises that the 28nm architecture will appear in smartphones and tablets.
