The Samsung Galaxy S III shipped 18 million smartphones in the third quarter of 2012, which was enough for the device to become the world's best-selling smartphone model, according to Strategy Analytics. The Galaxy S III bested the 16.2 million shipped for the iPhone 4S, which has consistently been the best-selling smartphone model since it was introduced in 2012. While the Android operating system collectively outsells the iOS-wielding iPhone, no single Android phone has managed to outsell any iPhone model until now.
Strategy Analytics notes that phone sales for the iPhone 4S stalled in the third quarter because customers anticipated the launch of the Apple iPhone 5. Widespread availability and "generous operator subsidies" helped propel the Galaxy S III to become the top smartphone in the world over the past three months.
Samsung can enjoy the victory only for a brief moment, according to Strategy Analytics. The firm expects the Apple iPhone 5 to out-ship the Samsung Galaxy S III in the fourth quarter and reclaim its position as the leading smartphone model. The iPhone 5 has had difficulty meeting customer demand for the iPhone 5, but increased supply will lead to higher sales than what is anticipated for the Galaxy S III.source: Strategy Anayltics
