Apple is prepared to unveil a smaller-screen iPad tablet later this month, according to a report published by AllThingsD. Apple was previously rumored to begin sending invitations to its iPad Mini event October 10, but the date passed without any invitations or confirmation that Apple would make any new product announcements. AllThingsD's John Paczkowski now says that his sources reveal that Apple will host an invitation-only event on October 23.
The rumored iPad Mini unveiling will be smaller than the event held to announce the iPhone 5 and iPod touch lineup last month, but it will have big implications. The October 23 event is only three days before Microsoft is expected to begin selling its Surface tablet, so Apple could still much of the pre-release hype Microsoft expected to gain as it launches its first self-produced tablet. A smaller iPad with a 7.85-inch LCD touchscreen and Lightning connector also might steal the limelight of the pending Kindle Fire HD launch. Apple is unlikely to price its iPad as low as $199, but it could introduce a cheaper, more portable version of its iPad that attracts users with name recognition and a larger app library.source: AllThingsD
