Though WatchESPN is used primarily to stream live ESPN broadcasts to an iPhone or iPad, the app is now capable of streaming to an Apple TV thanks to increased support for AirPlay. An update to the WatchESPN app now enables AirPlay mirroring of ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPN3 broadcasts. The app previously supported only ESPN3 for AirPlay, but this makes it possible to view more live broadcasts on an HDTV. WatchESPN also added the ability to stream in the background, allowing users to multitask. The app included several bug fixes and optimizations, but that is clearly the standout change.
ESPN still requires a cable subscription with select companies, so not everyone can access its streaming app. Customers of BrightHouse, Comcast, Time Warner, or Verizon can download WatchEPSN from iTunes.
