Toys"R"Us has traditionally been the store for parents to buy new toys for their children, but the retailer must want to be the place where parents buy gadgets as well. Toys"R"Us took a step towards that goal today when it announced a new Android tablet designed specifically for kids. The tabeo is child-friendly tablet that comes with 50 preloaded apps and games, parental controls, and content built around a theme to Entertain, Educate, and Explore.

The tabeo is a tablet with a 7-inch screen and a custom version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It has 4GB of internal storage, a microSD slot, front and rear cameras, Wi-Fi and HDMI connectivity, and battery life that promises up to 7 hours of video or 10 hours of normal use.

Though the tablet has only a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor and 1GB of RAM, this is not meant to be a premiere competitor to other 7-inch tablets. It's designed for kids to navigate easily, and parents to feel comfortable managing. Toys"R"Us includes security levels for up to eight users, so parents can set app and web browsing privileges according to the age appropriateness of multiple children. The software blocks websites based on 27 categories, and parents can add or remove sites to or from the list remotely. A tabeo can also limit when or how long a child accesses the internet.

The tabeo comes preloaded with nearly 20 popular games, including Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Cut the Rope, and Temple Run. It also has apps designed for photography, cooking, and other activities. The iStorybooks app enables reading, and learning apps from Discovery Kids and other sources help educate users. Parents can acquire more apps by visiting the tabeo App Store, a filtered store with apps that Toys"R"Us pre-approves.

Toys"R"Us will begin selling its tabeo tablet for $149.99 beginning October 21. The device will be available in stores nationwide and available for pre-order at tabeo.com today.
