Sony has announced that the Xperia PLAY smartphone will not be getting an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich after all, despite the company's earlier plans. Sony says that it has canceled the plans to upgrade the phone because it found there are major stability issues with Android 4.0 and this device, especially while gaming.
For awhile, everything was looking on track for the Android 4.0 upgrade for the PLAY. Sony had included it on its list of 2011 Xperia smartphones that will be upgraded, and it even released a beta version of the update earlier this year. Unfortunately, after going through Sony's tests, the Xperia PLAY just couldn't cut the mustard with Android 4.0 and the plans to upgrade it were scrapped.
Sony released a full statement on the status of the upgrade:
"In regards to Xperia PLAY, after extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners, we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich - therefore, we will not make the Android 4.0 upgrade available for Xperia PLAY.
This decision was also verified when we received similar feedback from the developer community; both experienced developers and advanced users, along with game content providers following our ICS beta ROM for unlocked Xperia PLAY smartphones.
Our priority has and always will be, to provide the best possible user experience on Xperia smartphones. In this instance the ICS upgrade would have compromised stability, where we look to ensure a quality gaming experience with games optimized and developed for Xperia PLAY."
Apparently, the Xperia PLAY's gaming-centric hardware and purpose did not gel well with Android 4.0. Sony's other Xperia phones, such as the Xperia arc, Xperia arc S, Xperia neo, Xperia neo V, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active, Xperia ray, and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman remain on track to get their updates to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the near future.source: Sony, via: SlashGear
