A new report on the mobile phone market for Q1 2012 from Gartner agrees with earlier reports: Samsung is the number one mobile phone and smartphone maker in the world, edging out Nokia and Apple for the titles. Additionally, Samsung was by far the dominant Android device maker, with 40 percent of Android shipments to its credit.
On a whole, mobile phone shipments decreased 2 percent from the same period in 2011, but players like Samsung and Apple both saw significant growth. Gartner says that Samsung moved nearly 87 million mobile phones in the quarter, enough for it to displace Nokia and its 83 million mobile phones for the top slot.
Gartner estimates that Samsung shipped 38 million smartphones in Q1, beating out Apple's reported 35.1 million iPhones. Total smartphone sales were up 44.7 percent from the prior year, reaching 144.4 million units.source: Gartner
