Samsung has announced the Galaxy Player 4.2, the latest member of its line of Wi-Fi-only media devices that compete with the Apple iPod touch. The Galaxy Player 4.2 sports a 4.2-inch display, and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Samsung's custom user interface.

The Galaxy Player 4.2's display has WVGA (480 x 800 pixel) resolution and is a TFT LCD. The media device is quite trim at only 8.99mm (0.35in) thick and it weighs a mere 113g (4oz).

Under the hood, the Galaxy Player 4.2 is essentially a high-end smartphone from 2010, as it is powered by a single-core, 1GHz processor and includes 8GB of internal storage. The storage capacity can be increased with a microSD card up to 32GB in capacity. The Player 4.2 has a 2 megapixel rear camera and a VGA front facing camera for video calls over Wi-Fi networks. There are also dual forward-facing stereo speakers and an embedded mic, so the Player 4.2 could be used for VoIP calls. Samsung has also thrown in an FM radio, GPS, and Bluetooth 3.0 support. Samsung promises 5 hours of video playback or 40 hours of music playback with the Player 4.2's 1,500mAh battery.

The Galaxy Player 4.2 will hit shelves on May 13 for $199.99. It includes a set of stereo headphones complete with an inline-remote and microphone. Pre-orders for the device can be placed starting May 13.
