Onavo, makers of an app that lets iPhone users compress cellular data and save money on limited data plans and roaming charges, has now brought its compression technology to the Android platform. The Onavo Extend app allows Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich users to compress the data used by their phone, saving usage and roaming costs.

Onavo has had a data monitoring app for Android for quite some time now, but it lacked the most interesting feature of the iPhone app: the ability to compress any data that goes in or out of the device. With Onavo Extend, Android 4.0 users can use as little as 20 percent of the data they currently consume without changing their usage habits.

Onavo says that the Extend app uses Google's own WebP compression technology to compress images without having to compromise on image quality. Onavo automatically compresses all images and converts them to the WebP format before sending them to your phone.

Onavo Extend for Android requires Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and is free and available in the Android Market now.
