LG has unveiled the Optimus 3D Max, the successor to last year's glasses-free 3D smartphone, the Optimus 3D. The 3D Max is slimmer and faster than its predecessor, and offers more 3D features.

Much of the Optimus 3D Max's specs appear to be carried over from last year's model, including the 4.3-inch, WVGA (480 x 800 pixel) display with Gorilla Glass and the dual-lens 5 megapixel camera. The processor has been bumped up to a 1.2GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4430, and there is 8GB of internal storage and 1GB of RAM built-in. LG did make some aesthetic changes to the 3D Max, as it measures only 9.6mm thick and weighs 148g, which is over 2mm thinner and nearly 20g lighter than the original Optimus 3D. The 3D Max also sports NFC capabilities and HSPA+ 21Mbps data speeds.

LG claims that it has upgraded the 2D to 3D conversion tools that first appeared on the Optimus 3D for the Optimus 3D Max, and that it has also improved the quality of 2D images capture with new software processing. The Optimus 3D Max will launch with Android 2.3 Gingerbread in March in Korea, and will then gradually be rolled out to European markets. LG promises that an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be offered shortly after launch.
