The MHL Consortium, the group responsible for the spec that enables mobile devices to output full 1080p HD video through a micro-USB port, has announced that over 50 million MHL-compatible devices were shipped in 2011. The Mobile High-definition Link (MHL) spec allows smartphones and tablets to output full HD video with up to 7.1 channel audio using a small adapter that also provides a charge back to the mobile device. The consortium was founded by a group of companies that includes Nokia and Samsung.
