Based on data released by Canalys today, 2011 was the first time that smartphone shipments surpassed those of computers, including tablets, for the global market. The analyst firm claims that phone manufacturers shipped 487.7 million smartphones for the year, which is up 63 percent from the 299.7 million units shipped in 2010. In contrast, there were only 414.6 million personal computers shipped in 2011.
Canalys also noted that 2011 saw a drop in demand for netbooks, notebook computers, and desktop PCs as a result of the increase in demand for tablets.
