LG released its Q4 and year-end 2011 performance reports, and though 2011 started with three disappointing quarters for the company's mobile phone division, the mobile business did manage to turn a profit in the fourth quarter.

LG reported shipments of 17.7 million mobile devices in Q4, which is down from the 21.1 million shipped in Q3. Revenue and profits were up, though, thanks to a stronger mix of smartphones in that 17.7 million figure. The company saw 2.8 trillion KRW (US$2.5 billion) in revenue from its handset lineup in Q4, and earned 10 billion KRW (US$8.9 million) in profit on that. For the year, revenues were 11.4 trillion KRW (US$10.14 billion), but the company posted a loss of 286 billion KRW (US$255 million).

For 2012, LG plans to focus on LTE smartphones as its ticket to profits. It claims that it intends to expand it smartphone lineup in multiple markets, with LTE smartphones leading the charge.
