In an interview with CNET, Samsung vice president Kevin Packingham said that his company intends for the batteries in all of its 2012 smartphones to be able to last at least a full day, from wake-up until bed, with average to moderately heavy use.

That's something that few Android-powered smartphones can claim today.

To reach that goal, Samsung will start using larger batteries in its devices and will also optimize the power-sipping traits of their components. Packingham did not give any specifics as to what exactly would be optimized or how large the batteries in its new smartphones would be.

Motorola, for its part, took its popular DROID RAZR for Verizon Wireless, which measures only 7.1mm in thickness, and fattened it up create the 4G LTE-capable DROID RAZR MAXX by including a 3300mAh battery. If Samsung follows suit with its Galaxy S II lineup, it could signal a new trend in the industry where battery life is more important than having a thin design.
