Research firm comScore has released its latest report on the mobile industry in the U.S., and not much has changed since the last report. As we saw with the report covering August through October, the new report for September through November shows Samsung holding on to its lead as the top mobile phone manufacturer, and Android maintaining its first place spot in the smartphone OS battle.

Samsung and Apple both increased their market share over the report ending in August, with Samsung gaining 0.3 percentage points to 25.6 percent, and Apple moving up 1.4 percentage points to 11.2 percent. The three other manufacturers in the top 5 show minimal losses, and LG and Motorola held on to their second and third place positions, while RIM lingered behind Apple to hang on to fifth place.

Smartphone use in the U.S. grew 8 percent over the three month period ending in August, with a reported 91.4 million people in the U.S. carrying smartphones. Android led that charge with 46.9 percent of the market, an increase of 3.2 points. Apple's iOS strengthened its second place position with 28.7 percent of the market, growing 1.4 points, while RIM's BlackBerry platform was the big loser, dropping 3.1 points to 16.6 percent of the market.
