Following Sony Ericsson's lead, Nokia announced last week that it too would be discontinuing its home-grown contacts backup service. Ovi Contacts allowed users to upload their contacts stored on mobile phones to Nokia's servers, and then access them from the web. The service will be officially discontinued on January 24, 2012, but Nokia is providing existing users with the option to export their contacts that are still stored there to other services, even after Ovi Contacts goes dark. Nokia says that it is canceling the Ovi Contacts service because of its shift in focus to the Windows Phone smartphone platform.
