Navigation software maker TeleNav has announced a new, browser-based GPS navigation app that can provide turn-by-turn directions to smartphone owners. The new app relies heavily on HTML5 technology, and will be free to use.

TeleNav says that the new webapp is the first browser-based navigation system that provides voice-guided, turn-by-turn directions. Instead of positioning it as something that users will access directly, TeleNav says that developers of websites and apps that use local recommendations will be able to add turn-by-turn navigation service to their apps with just one line of code. The HTML5 service looks very similar to TelNav's stand-alone GPS applications, and features full-color moving maps, audio directions, and automatic rerouting.

The new service is expected to launch early next year, but TeleNav is looking for developers to test it out now. Interested developers can sign up at www.telenav.com/developer/html5.
