Nielsen has just released its latest report on the smartphone market in the U.S., and as has been the trend for some time now, Android is still the top smartphone OS, while Apple is still the top smartphone manufacturer. Though other companies, Samsung in particular, have made inroads into Apple's market share in other parts of the world, the Cupertino company still has a strong lead in the U.S. market.

According to the stats, Apple has 28.3 percent of the smartphone market in the U.S., with HTC in second place at 20.3 percent. Samsung may have reportedly shipped the most smartphones worldwide last quarter, but it is still the number four smartphone maker in the U.S., with a combined market share of 11 percent across its Android, Windows Phone 7, and other smartphones. RIM is holding on to the third place slot with 17.8 percent market share, while Motorola rounds out the top 5 with 10.6 percent.

Though Apple is the number one manufacturer in the U.S., the proliferation of Android devices from multiple manufacturers has given Google's operating system 42.8 percent of the smartphone market, compared to Apple's 28.3 percent. RIM holds on to third place with its 17.8 percent share, and Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 and Windows Mobile operating systems claim a combined 6.1 percent.
