A new smartphone supposedly coming from HTC promises to make other leaked smartphones sound obsolete before they even arrive, assuming its purported specs are accurate. The so-called HTC "Zeta" is claimed to have a ridiculously fast quad-core processor and the 720p display that will apparently be status-quo for 2012.

According to a tipster reporting to Engadget, the Zeta features an all-new industrial design that is a marked break from the design language that HTC has followed for the past few years. Featuring sharp edges and a rectangular shape, the Zeta doesn't really look like anything else, and that certainly isn't a bad thing. Under the hood is supposedly a 2.5GHz, quad-core Qualcomm processor and 1GB of RAM, which is significantly more powerful than anything we have seen to date. The Zeta sports a 4.5-inch, 720p (1280 x 720 pixel) display, an 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and 1080p video, a 1.3 megapixel front camera, Beats Audio, Bluetooth 4.0, 32GB of internal storage, and an 1,830mAh battery. Engadget says the Zeta measures just under 10mm thick, at 109.8mm x 60.9mm x 9.8mm (4.32in x 2.4in x 0.39in), and weighs 146g (5.15 oz).

Expected to debut with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and the latest version of HTC's Sense UI - presumably 4.0 as well, the Zeta is due to hit shelves at some point next year, but the tipster did not offer an exact release time period or expected price. This looks like the king of the hill for leaked smartphones - until the next one inevitably shows up, of course.
