It appears that yesterday's report was accurate, as Google has just announced the official Gmail app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The Gmail app for iOS offers everything a Gmail addict could wish for, including push notifications and complete search of a user's entire Gmail account.

In addition to the necessary push notification and search support, the Gmail app has been fully optimized to take advantage of iOS devices. Users can access all of their Gmail labels, upload photos as attachments, and archive, star, and organize their messages. The Gmail app supports auto-complete of email addresses and Google usernames, Priority Inbox for important messages, and various gestures, such as swiping and pull-to-refresh. The iPad version features a split view to see both your inbox and a messages at the same time, similar to the Gmail webapp for the iPad.

Gmail for iOS is free and compatible with iOS 4 or greater. It should be available in the iTunes App Store now.
