RIM has announced that it has purchased NewBay, a white-label cloud services company. The Canadian smartphone maker did not provide details about the purchase, but some have reported that the deal is worth $100 million.
RIM will likely use NewBay's experience with cloud-based media management to strengthen the BlackBerry smartphone platform's cloud offerings. NewBay's cloud management service lets users store pictures, videos, and other types of media on remote servers, which they can then access with their devices. It also lets them easily share the stored content with others. NewBay already has agreements with various carriers to provide cloud services, including T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and overseas carriers. [via All Things D]
