Consumers expect mobile pages to load as fast as desktop pages, are often left unhappy

According to a new study by Compuware, mobile web users expect websites to load as fast on their mobile devices as they do on a desktop computer at home. Despite this expectation, almost half of the users polled in the study said that sites loaded slower on their mobile phone than on their home computer.

The study, which polled more than 4,000 users across the world, found that 71 percent expected a web page to load on their mobile phone as fast as it did on a home computer, and that 74 percent expected the page to load within 5 seconds of calling it up. Sixty percent wanted the page to load within 3 seconds. Almost half (46 percent) of those polled complained that sites loaded slower on their mobile phones than on a desktop computers.

There are a number of factors that can contribute to the time it takes a web page to load. Mobile sites are becoming more advanced and complex, with fancier animations and slicker designs, all of which take more time to load. A home internet connection is almost always faster than a mobile connection, and home computers are considerably more powerful than smartphones or tablet devices when it comes to processing power. However, with the advent of dual-core processors in mobile devices and the proliferation of 4G networks, which offer higher connection speeds, users should soon see the kinds of load times that they are looking for on their mobile devices.

Companies who are trying to reach their customers through mobile websites need to be aware of the expectations of the consumer, as a third of consumers will go to a competitor's site if the initial mobile site that they tried does not load. Mobile phones and tablets are getting better, and faster, at browsing the web with each generation, but website builders still should be optimizing their websites for performance before features.
